Albert Salman, Green Destinations President

Can you tell us a bit about Green Destinations? And the activities the organization carries out?

Green Destinations is a non-profit organisation for sustainable tourism, leading a global Partnership of expert organisations, companies, and academic institutions. Together with our partners and through Country Representatives, we lead the “Green Destinations Community” of destinations, destinations ambassadors and stakeholders.

We developed an affordable Sustainability Assessment, Awards and Certification programme that is easy to use for small and larger destinations. It works through an online platform, based upon the GSTC-Recognised Green Destinations Standard. This helps destinations to improve sustainability management and performance.

2017 has been declared by the UN as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. And IT.A.CÀ Festival is included in the list of events taking place this year. What do you think about the achievements of this celebration so far? And the implications for the future of Sustainable Tourism?

It is nice to see so many events linking to this International Year.

Green Destinations has taken two important initiatives in connection to the Year’s theme.

We started the Green Destinations Ambassadors initiative with the aim to create a global community of people all promoting sustainable tourism destinations. We encourage the development of country based communities, so we hope that many people at the IT.A.CÀ Festival will join the Italian green destinations ambassador’s community.

The Sustainability Makers: the first forty Green Destinations Ambassadors were inaugurated at Global GD Day 2016. Now, more than 250 have been recognised.

Secondly, we have connected the criteria of our Green Destinations Standard with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and we can assist destinations in how to make current tourism more sustainable, but also to develop new sustainable tourism approaches as a way to advance the SDGs. As far as we know, this is the only ground breaking new initiative making the theme of the International Year “Sustainable Tourism for Development”, truly operational for every destination in the world. More about this at the conference!

What about the initiative of celebrating a Global Green Destinations Day?

The aim of the Green Destinations Days is to create annual platforms for destinations, stakeholders and experts to meet and to discuss the future of tourism. The first Global GD Day 2016 in Ljubljana (Slovenia) was an enormous success, bringing together 350 people from 36 countries, making it the largest meeting of sustainable destinations ever in the world.

Now we are preparing the second Global GD Day as part of GREENFEST, the largest public event for sustainability in Portugal, 28-30 September 2017.

This year for the first time, an international event will take place inside IT.A.CÀ and it will be the first Green Destinations Day in Italy. What are your expectations for this event? Both for the Conference and the networking meeting.

Italy may well be the country with the largest history in responsible tourism, and there are so many initiatives in this field. We hope that the Italian GD Day Conference will provide opportunities to learn what is going on in and around Italy, and what are remaining concerns and challenges.

For the networking meeting, we are very modest in our ambitions, but maybe we can help in building a bridge between Italian initiatives and the global sustainable tourism community; and maybe the concept of an Italian green destinations ambassadors network is useful to connect several existing networks. So we are really happy that the ITACA Festival enables us to connect with so many Italian tourism experts, with such a long experience.

Who can participate in the networking meeting and what can participants expect from this event? What are the expected outcomes of the meeting?

Everybody interested in responsible tourism from a strategic point of view is welcome: people from NGOs, destinations, businesses, academics and students.

The two new Italian 2017 Top 100 Award winners will share some of their experience and their need for support.

The Sustainability Winners, representing the Sustainable Destinations Top 100, on the podium at the Global GD Day Gala 2016.

Italian Green Destinations Ambassadors, tourism sector operators and representatives of destinations are invited to present their ambitions. The main question to the Italian participants will be to express their opinion on how destinations can be better supported by other networks.

People who would like to become active will be invited to join the GD Ambassadors Community and help strengthen the Italian networking for sustainable tourism.

Finally, which message would you give to young people in Italy interested in pursuing a career in sustainable tourism?

To the entrepreneurs I would say: with a constantly growing tourism market globally, there is room for new businesses, especially in the field of services making use of social networks, social media and IT.

To the strategists and planners, I would say: there are thousands of Italian destinations, businesses and services that must become more sustainable to keep Italy competitive.

Some of today’s biggest challenges in sustainable tourism are how to reduce mass tourism nuisance, negative economic impacts of Airbnb, the parasitic and polluting impacts of cruise tourism, and greenwashing. If we don’t act, tourism will become a nightmare for many, as it already is in an increasing number of places.

Tomorrow’s tourism must be a lot more responsible, not because consumers choose it, but because they expect and demand it. If they don’t find it, they will leave critical reviews, and not come back.
